After 2 of the most hectic weeks of my life to this point it's off to another race. This one the OBRA Road Race State Championships held at Silverton, OR. Never heard of it? Me either.
(a picture from today's race)
3 laps, 50ish miles, 1450ft of climbing per lap and some stupid/itchy 3s. Oh what fun.
My thoughts the first time up the climb: "this is it? Is this really what everyone was complaining about"
Second time up the climb, cross-eyed and redlining: "who the f*** is doing this to me?" I look over and see a teammate with his eyes about ready to pop out of his head. I suddenly feel a lot better. Well, turns out that was one of our guys on the front drilling it. He established a break of 3 and they went to work building their advantage. As a team we did a sufficient job of causing pandemonium and disrupting just about any chase effort that moved. And then two of the three rejoined the pack with half a lap to go. Let the BS games begin. I won't go into my frustrations with road racing but let's just say they came out again today.
Chase, chase, chase, sit up, chase, sit up, play a little grab ass and chase some more. We eventually caught the solo break at 1k to go. Too bad he didn't have just a little more gas.
The uphill charge begins, I have great legs but am about 2 rows too far back. Wound up 6th. Not a great result but we worked really well together as a team and everyone came away safe. Can't complain about that.
In related news, the internet broke and accidently awarded one of our riders the championship. I think they've fixed it by now but it makes for a good story, right?
