Mount Hood Cycling Classic: Prologue

Dictionary.com defines a prologue as "a preliminary discourse; a preface or introductory part of a discourse..."  Instead, I define it as "as exercise, equivalent to repeatedly striking oneself in the head with a hammer, in which one wastes an entire day to go race for less than 10 minutes for the simple purpose of establishing who sucks more."

As you can guess, the prologue didn't quite go as well as I'd hoped.  132nd place and 1:15 off the lead.  While my time off the lead isn't anything I'm really worried about at this race I'm simply amazed that I'm a minute slower over 3 measly little miles than some guy I've never heard of.  Then again, we'll see how he climbs tomorrow.

Oh, and the "oh, shit" moment finally hit.  I always knew this was a big race but I never really grasped exactly how big it was until we rolled into the parking lot today and I saw teams like Trek Red Truck, Yahoo, Peanut & Butter Co and Cal Giant Strawberry.  Oh yeah, and I'm racing against guys who dedicate the entirety of their peak physical lives to racing at this level.  I guess that I'm ok with my performance, I just have a feeling that race kind of sets the tone for the rest of this weekend.  We'll see, at least I can't complain about finishing the race and still having something left in the tank, right?

Here's a look at the hell that tomorrow holds for me.  84 miles, almost 8000ft of climbing.  With fast people.  Awesome.
