So it's been a while since Elkhorn; I've finally forgotten about the totally shattered state that Mt. Dooley left me in and decided I could keep racing my bike. 3 days after the thrashing of Dooley I raced Tabor. And got killed. Off the back and then scored with the main field as I got lapped. Yippie, skippy, yet another race off the back.
Then I didn't touch a bike for a few days. I started feeling like I could actually finish a race; went out and raced the Franz Crit and had a blast. Nothing spectacular as far as results but I went out, stayed safe and had a great time.
From there I went for a hike (and didn't even think about a bike).
Meh, took a few more days off then raced PIR and Tabor back-to-back. Hey, my legs were back! Put in some good digs at PIR and actually finished with the pack at Tabor.
Then I trained over the weekend. Team ride on Saturday out to Larch Mountain and back; 100+ miles of hot, DHFT. Well done team. Went out and beat up on a group ride on Monday then went and helped with the PIR 100. 100 miles at PIR? Bo-ring.
So you'd think that a few good rides would have put my legs in a really good place. Wrong. My legs feel like they're shattered into millions of tiny little pieces. I knew Tabor was going to be hard last night but I guess I was hoping for a miracle. Nope, 3 laps in and I'm off the back after trying to help a teammate who was falling off the back. Chased a lap then gave up. Eventually got caught then attacked the field, blew up, retreated back to the field and slowly came off on the final lap as the sprinters drilled the pace.
Here's my analysis: training=cracked legs; not training=feel good physically, mentally and can help the team. My conclusion: I'm not touching a bike for a month. I'll race the crits, help the team and just generally screw around until I get CX plans figured out. It's been a full season and you couldn't pay me enough to race Cascade in a few weeks. I'm going to ride out my fitness and build cx bikes for the next month. Heck, after the High Desert Omnium this weekend road is over!
